What is it Like to Attend University of Dallas

What is it Like to Attend University of Dallas The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teach theyre sharing their college experiences as well. Michael is a Dallas Fort Worth tutor specializing in Essay Editing tutoring, AP English tutoring, STAAR prep tutoring, and more. He graduated from University of Dallas in 2003 with a Bachelors degree in English. Check out his review of his alma mater: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. How urban or safe is the campus? Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Michael: The campus is located in the Dallas suburb of Irving, Texas, and it is about a 15-minute drive from downtown Dallas. The physical campus is relatively small, as is the student body population, compared to large, public universities. However, students feel relatively safe on campus. There is a fairly new DART (Dallas Area Rapid Transit) station just next to campus and well within walking distance. The train is a convenient and inexpensive way to travel to many popular locations in Dallas. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Michael: Most professors and academic advisers are very available for students. Because of the relatively small class sizes, there are few teaching assistants. Most classes are taught directly by the professors. Many of the professors are truly respected and admired by the student body. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Michael: In the past ten years, the University of Dallas has made efforts to renovate existing dormitories. Several years ago, a massive new dormitory building was built on campus. The cafeteria offers many dining options, and there is a student cafe that offers other options of pizza, Tex-Mex, and sandwiches. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Michael: As a liberal arts university, the English program is often one of the best represented fields. I was an English major. Politics and Theology are also well represented. However, in the past few years, a new College of Business has opened up many other learning opportunities for students. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Michael: For me personally, I met people and made friends primarily through working on university theater productions. The Theater department often relies on non-drama majors to audition and volunteer to work on productions, which creates an amazing and unique opportunity to meet students from other majors. Greek life does not play any role in the campus social life. VT: How helpful is the Career Center and other student support services? Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Michael: My experience has been very positive with the Career Center and student support services. Because of the relatively small student population, university employees are able to devote time and energy to students. VT: How are the various study areas such as libraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Michael: These areas are rarely over-crowded. There are many easily available areas on campus for socializing or studying. The main student building has a popular coffee bar with tables that are often occupied. However, there is always a quiet space available in and around the library. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between? To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Michael: When I was a student, there was little public transportation available to get to Dallas. However, with the opening of a new train station across the highway from campus, students now have a convenient and inexpensive way to quickly travel to many popular areas of Dallas, including the West End and Deep Ellum. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Michael: The student body is relatively small compared to many public universities. Because of this, typical class sizes are relatively small. I was very pleased with the professor to student ratio. Each class provides an opportunity for students to discuss and share ideas. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one you regret the most. Michael: I remember one semester I was late registering for courses, and I signed up for a Shakespeare class as an elective. This particular class was very popular and was taught by a very popular English professor. The class always filled up quickly. I was told by the registrar's office that the Shakespeare class was already full. When I talked with the professor, though, he told me that if I could fit in the room I was more than welcome to come. That made a big impression on me. Professors at UD are focused primarily on learning and are willing to work with students to make this happen. Check out Michaels tutoring profile. 3 Reasons to Consider Obtaining College Admissions Advice

3 Reasons to Consider Obtaining College Admissions Advice Improving Academic Performance You (or your child) studied hard for three years in high school. You’ve now got a solid GPA, and along the way you took difficult classes: AP Calculus, AP Biology, AP US History, and AP Physics. You earned a 4 or a 5 on each of these difficult AP tests. You played several sports at the Varisity level, and even wrote for the school newspaper. You’ve taken the ACT several times, as well. The first time you scored a 25. Then, you took an ACT prep course, and scored a 27. Finally, you hired a private ACT tutor, received customized help, and scored a 30. Now, your applications are looking good. The problem is that thousands of other high school seniors are in the same boat, with generally impressive overall backgrounds. That’s why biting the bullet and paying for college admissions advice might be a worthwhile investment. There are three reasons why paying for college admissions advice might make sense: #1 - If You Know What Admissions Committees are Looking For, Your Chances of Success Increase There is an all-important general theme running through college application questions â€" the school is trying to learn more about you with each question, essay, or request for data. Admissions advisors are good at understanding what the school is trying to learn with every question on the application, and they’ll help you write responses which get at the core of what is being asked by the college. Certainly, they’ll also help you write generally better essays that are clearer and more concise. #2 â€" College Is Expensive, and the Return on Investment Varies Widely High quality admissions advice can be expensive â€" it could run you $2,000 or more. However, the return on a $200,000 investment associated with a B.S. in Engineering from, say, Northwestern University vs. a B.S. in Engineering from a middle of the road state school probably varies substantially. At Northwestern, better companies actively recruit, and you might end up finding a job quicker â€" or, let’s assume, you might end up earning $10,000 more per year for the next decade â€" $100,000 (over a decade). If you’re the type of candidate with even an outside shot at Northwestern, consider your odds.Let’s assume you think without any admissions advice, you just wouldn’t get in. Also assume that Northwestern and the other school you’re considering cost about the same. With some help via personalized admissions advice, you might have a 1 in 5 shot at getting into Northwestern University, because your essays would position you really well. So, you face the following decision. Should you spend $2,000 for admissions advice, which would result in you having a 20% chance of earning an extra $100,000 over the next decade? Well, a 20% chance at $100,000 is worth $20,000 â€" that’s the expected value of the decision to spend $2,000 (for you finance people, let’s just ignore the time value of money here). Would you spend $2,000 to get $20,000? You can play with the numbers all you want, but that’s the idea. It’s not a clear cut choice. #3 â€" Different Schools Seek Different Candidates Many students don’t realize this, but different colleges really do seek different candidates. While some large public colleges simply use a sliding scale of GPA vs. ACT/SAT score, others read essays carefully and put much less weight on GPA, test scores, or both. Some private colleges receive many applications and are very selective overall, but also work carefully to construct the type of incoming class they desire. GPA and test score will always matter, but sometimes the college is historically short on athletes, or business majors, or whatever â€" which means if you are one of these people, your chances of admission go up. Professional admissions advisors understand these types of things, and can help you apply where your chances of getting a scholarship or getting admitted increase.Visit our ACT/SAT and College Admissions tools and resources page for more information and advice about college admissions.

LSAT Keys to Success Pacing Yourself

LSAT Keys to Success Pacing Yourself LSAT Law School Blog The LSAT Is All About Pacing In an earlier blog, I wrote about the crucial importance of timing yourself when preparing for the LSAT. A companion strategy to timing is pacing. Once you get a sense of how quickly you have to work, develop a pacing plan that works for you. The goal is to practice enough and take enough timed test sections that you are extremely comfortable when you open that book to each section. You know exactly how quickly you’ll have to work within each section. You know some will be harder and some will be easier, but you know how to pace yourself. You will eventually develop a pacing strategy for each section: Logic Games/Analytical Reasoning - Typically, one section will have four logic games. It’s a good idea to quickly flip through the section, and put an X over the game style that’s most difficult for you and save it for last. There may be a time in the Games section where you cannot make any headway in one of the first three you’ve chosen. You’ll get that sinking feeling you chose the wrong game to save for last and panic wondering if you should stick with this one or abandon it. Use your timed practice to experiment how long it takes to move to a 4th game and set it up. Reading Comprehension â€" This section is tricky, because passages that read easily and are about a topic you like can turn out to have the most difficult questions. It’s a good idea to use your timed practice tests to get a sense of how much time you have to start through a passage and figure out if you want to stay with it or skip it. Logical Reasoning â€" You must remember that on the logical reasoning section, every question is worth one point. Some you can read and solve quickly, some you can resolve with a little thinking. When you get stuck, train yourself while practicing to just move on. Make a guess and come back to it later if there’s time. It might be a good idea to think about pacing when you need a break from the content. On one of those days when the reading comprehension passages no longer make any sense and you can’t look at another logic game, take a break and formalize your pacing strategies.

The Pimsleur method makes use of four main principles: organic learning, graduated interval recall, anticipation and core vocabulary. However, other programs also make use of similar principles. Here are 14 possible Pimsleur alternatives.Organic LearningThe principle of organic learning ties into the idea of learning material in context. In summation, Pimsleur focuses on introducing new information in the context of a realistic conversation. For Pimsleur, this means using scripted audio dialogues that replicate actual conversations. The general idea behind organic learning is that learning in context is thought to improve retention and make learners more prepared to use the skills theyve learned. Here are some other programs that use a similar principle.FluentUFor a fun and multifaceted organic learning experience, FluentU is hard to beat. FluentU takes real world videosâ€"like music videos, movie trailers, news and moreâ€"and converts them into t op-notch learning tools. With FluentU, you hear languages in real-world contextsâ€"the way that native speakers actually use them. However, youll be limited to 10 phrase translations per day. If you subscribe for the premium edition, all the services are unlimited .And if youre not sure what to read, Readlang can even help you with that. Readlang provides some articles through the website.ClozemasterAvailable: iOS | AndroidClozemaster offers organic learning through realistic example sentences.Youll be presented with sentences and their translations and asked to fill in the blanks. Not only does this give you a realistic idea of how a word might be used, it gives you experience using that word, which also exercises one of the principles well discuss later, anticipation. For some languages, some of the sentences also include audio. In addition, if you sign up for a free account, you can access readings in your target language. If you sign up for a pro account, youll have access to even more features. For instance, you can select if you want to work on vocabulary, listening or speaking and can choose between multiple choice and text input.Plus, Clozemaster offers a huge array of languages, including some you may not even have heard of. For instan ce, you can study Breton, Occitan, Piedmontese and more.TandemAvailable: iOS | AndroidOne of the most natural ways to learn organically is to learn through interacting with native speakers, and Tandem allows you to do just that. However, Tandem also provides additional resources, so you wont be in over your head.Tandem allows you to search conversation partners and connect with them immediately for free. Afterwards, you and your partner can leave reviews of each other so you have a clearer idea of what you need to work on.Premium memberships unlock a host of additional options, including unlimited translations, the ability to search for users near you and the removal of ads.The translation features are particularly useful for organic learning. After all, youll be looking up the words you need to know when you need to use them, which is about as in-context as learning can get.Graduated Interval RecallGraduated interval recall has to do with the spacing with which learners are exposed to material. The logic is that spacing out material at increasingly distant intervals will improve a learners ability to remember a word. Pimsleur carefully spaces out the material youll be presented with in attempts to aid retention.Graduated interval recall is much like the idea behind spaced repetition systems, which are used in the following programs.GlossikaGlossika is a language learning system that focuses primarily on listening and speaking. To help learners acquire these essential skills and build vocabulary, Glossika uses spaced repetition. Glossika refers to this as doing reps, so you can feel like your language skills are finally getting the workout they deserve. You can even adjust the audio speed so that it feels like an appropriate rate of speech for you.Words and phrases are intended to be realistic, so Glossika also plays somewhat on the organic learning principle.Plus, Glossikas algorithm adjusts to you, making the learning experience more customized for each lear ner. With over 50 language options, youre likely to be able to find a Glossika program for your target language.AnkiAppAvailable: iOS | AndroidAnkiApp is all about spaced repetition. Its kind of AnkiApps thing.Rather than being focused exclusively on language education, AnkiApp is actually a flashcard app that uses spaced repetition to help users learn whatever material theyre studying. The spaced repetition system is designed to make learning more efficient by analyzing how youve done and carefully selecting what you need to work on.You can create your own flashcards that incorporate words, images and/or audio, but if youd rather get started right away, there are also plenty of existing language learning sets you can enjoy.Plus, AnkiApp is free!SuperMemoAvailable: iOS | AndroidSuperMemo has been optimizing spaced repetition intervals since the 1980s, so theyve got mad experience in the field. And guess what? SuperMemo already offers a collection of over 100 courses to help users learn more than 10 different languages.Have a special set of vocabulary that you want to learn? You can also create your own course and use SuperMemo to optimize your learning with its spaced repetition. Some of SuperMemos materials are free, though others are only available with a premium membership.VocAppAvailable: iOS | AndroidIf youre looking for a vocabulary app designed specifically for language learners that uses a spaced repetition system, look no further! VocApp is intended to help language learners expand vocabulary quickly through spaced repetition. This flashcard system allows you to access existing sets or create your own with texts, translations, images and audio. The app itself is free, and you can create your own sets for free. While course samples are free, in-app purchases are available to enjoy the whole course.AnticipationThe principle of anticipation asserts that having the opportunity to anticipate a correct response can trigger new connections. In the Pimsleur program , this means that learners are prompted, theres a pause to allow learners to respond and then a correct response is provided. Similarly, these other programs give you an opportunity to respond.Rocket LanguagesRocket Languages is a learning program that also uses the principle of anticipation.Rocket Languages features hours upon hours of audio lessons. But rather than merely playing examples for you, these audio lessons are interactive, engaging you more actively and inviting you to anticipate responses. But Rocket Languages is so much more than audio lessons alone. The program also offers grammar lessons, cultural lessons, voice recognition, flashcards and additional features.Rocket Languages is available for the following languages:ArabicChineseFrenchGermanItalianJapaneseKoreanPortugueseRussianSpanishLinguaphoneLinguaphone offers a simple method that uses the principle of anticipation to the learners advantage. The method is a simple sequence: listen, understand, speak.First, a nativ e speaker speaks a sentence slowly as you read along. As the course progresses, the speakers rate increases to a more natural pace. Then, you begin to understand what youre hearing and reading. Finally, youre invited to speak. Early in the course, this means trying to replicate what native speakers say, but later youll actually be invited to participate in simulated conversations.Additionally, Linguaphone plays on the principle of organic learning by presenting material in a realistic context.Michel ThomasMichel Thomas courses feature audio-based learning. In this system, you simply listen and repeat. The idea is that over time, youll build confidence and skills that you can use in real life. In fact, youll be saying complete sentences right off the bat.An added benefit of the Michel Thomas course is that its audio-based, meaning you can listen to it on your commute, during your next boring meeting or even in the shower. Just be sure to whisper your responses if people are around or yo u may get some side-eye.Focus on Core VocabularyIts no secret that some words are much more common than others. Because of this, Pimsleur and many other programs focus on core vocabulary, which means focusing on a small number of high-frequency words before expanding on that vocabulary. Pimsleur purposely limits the total number of words youre exposed to early on so as not to overwhelm you, aiming to give you a strong foundation. Other programs that provide a strong foundation in core vocabulary include the following.Mango LanguagesMango Languages is another program that focuses on building a strong foundation through relevant vocabulary.Lessons feature realistic phrases that youre likely to want to use in real life. Then, phrases are broken down into vocabulary and grammar rules. These basic phrases give you the foundations you need to start using your target language right away, but they also provide valuable skills you can build upon down the road. And, because vocabulary is intro duced in realistic conversations, Mango Languages also uses the principle of organic learning.Living LanguageLiving Language courses focus on all the essentials: the essential vocabulary, the essential grammar and the essential cultural information. And when it comes to the principle of core vocabulary, focusing on these essentials is helpful. Beginning courses will introduce you to the basic words you need to start communicating, but Living Language courses also offer something special for more advanced students: There are specialty courses related to travel, business and particular professions, meaning you can also build a core vocabulary in a more specialized category.LanguagePod101.comLanguagePod101.com offers podcasts, audio and video for tons of different languages, and many of these materials focus on teaching core vocabulary. One major benefit of the LanguagePod101.com series is that most vocabulary materials are grouped by theme, meaning you can easily learn core vocabulary b ased around your needs. For instance, you might find podcasts, audio and/or video covering things like airport vocabulary, phrases to introduce yourself and phrases to use in restaurants.Additionally, the materials from LanguagePod101.com are usually short, so learners are less likely to get swamped down by massive vocabulary lists.LanguagePod101 has programs available for the following languages:ArabicChineseFrenchGermanItalianJapaneseKoreanPortugueseRussianSpanishSo try these Pimsleur alternatives to shoot your language learning into the stratosphere!

Why We Should Talk About Politics And VOTE

Why We Should Talk About Politics And VOTE via Afrolly News USA Whether or not youre happy with the election results, there was something different this time around. Scrolling down Facebooks timeline, you noticed more and more I Voted, Did You? statuses from your friends. Well, at least I did here in Florida. According to U.S. News and World Report, the midterm turnout increased in only 12 states, but decreased in the remaining states (in comparison with the 2010 midterm elections). However, only 13 percent of voters in this years election were under 30 years old. So whats the deal? Its very likely that people who chose to vote have simply become more vocal about it. Florida, especially, was very vocal about the legalization of medical marijuana â€" which gained a lot of support from college kids (what a surprise). Then, everyone was even louder when the amendment didnt pass. Choosing to not vote, I can understand but I dont agree with it. Its easy to feel a distrust of the government after growing up hearing about the thousands of soldiers dying overseas, witnessing 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina at young ages and the recent unrest in Ferguson. The government and authorities aren’t perfect by any means. Many see not voting as a protest to the government, but really, its just making things worse; instead of the government hearing how unhappy you are with the laws and politicians, theyre hearing NOTHING. Now, sometimes you’re put in a difficult situation where you don’t like ANY of the candidates, but in that case you have to weigh the pros and the cons and narrow it down. It can be tough, but you have to figure out what’s best for you and your community. Midterm elections are known for not getting as many voters to the polls, but what we need to remember is that it’s really the local government that affects us directly. I feel the same pain in having to watch political ad after political ad, not knowing what’s true and whats false. But its our duty to educate ourselves. Talks on politics were always on the hush-hush around friends and family because of the easy transition from debate into all-out war.  It’s frowned upon to express your opinion on politics and deep topics. But what’s so wrong about talking about politics â€" as long as everyone is respectful and (at least trying to be) factual. Don’t be THAT guy via E! Online While I am encouraging that we all participate in healthy political debates among our peers, there is definitely a line you don’t want to crossbasically anything that is vulgar, disrespectful or fabricated. Keep it to facts as much as possible. If you state your opinion, back it up by facts and evidence. (FYI, citing biased “news sources” does not count as facts.) OK, sometimes politicians are unanimously called “idiots” by all parties and deserve it, but who put that idiot into office? You, even if you didn’t vote actually, especially since you didn’t vote. However, know the line between debate and the beginning of a screaming match. For example, Ben Stein (the guy in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off  who repeats ‘Bueller, Bueller, Bueller …’) decided to go on Fox News  to give some “commentary” on President Obama and how he is doing in the White House. While he is entitled to his opinion, he crossed the line right here: “This president is the most racist president there has been in America.” That is a sentence taken word-for-word that Ben Stein said on camera, without batting an eye. By no means does anyone have to like the president or agree with all of his policies. But this is a strong comment to say on national television. Maybe it’s just me, but I’m pretty sure that twelve presidents have actually owned slaves, and eight of those owned slaves while holding office. By default, Obama should be no more than the 12th most racist president, if he is considered racist at all. If Ben Stein would have used facts to back up this claim, instead of more and more opinion, then it could be taken seriously. Instead, he just angered a large portion of America by making such a loud, obnoxious opinion. Turn Out For What via Instagram On a better note, there was one celebrity that made it clear he would do anything to make his voice heard in this year’s election. Lil’ Jon posted on Instagram that he had to catch a last minute flight back to his hometown in Atlanta in order to cast his ballot. Apparently, Atlanta had some issues with absentee ballots this year and Lil’ Jon is fortunate enough (rich enough) to be able to go to the extremes to vote. While he showed that he was a proud voter, he also made light on the issues that people face when voting. Lil Jon was not alone because Atlanta experienced issues all over the city with absentee ballots not being sent out. Hopefully, it won’t be an issue come next election. Politics hasn’t always been the thing to give people “cool points,” but maybe with celebrities being more vocal and present in the voting eye, people will see that their voice can be heard and SHOULD be heard. Whether you have specific issues you are voting for or not, make your vote and voice count.

One Week Traveling in Indonesia

One Week Traveling in Indonesia By Dorothee RemboldIndonesia, a nation of over 17,000 islands, is the world’s 4th most populous country and attracts visitors with its rich variety of historic sights, incredible landscapes, and gorgeous beaches. Whether you’re teaching in Indonesia or are teaching abroad in Asia, these islands should be on the top of your travel bucket list. Below is a suggestion for a week-long travel itinerary in Indonesia, specifically central Java:Day 1 â€" Indonesia’s royal luxuryBegin your one week trip through Indonesia in one of its oldest cities, Yogyakarta. The Kraton Complex, or Sri Sultan’s palace, displays the royal splendor of life as a Sultan. Regular music and dance shows introduce visitors to Indonesian culture. Spend the afternoon exploring the city; discover the Dutch water castle, which features a charming network of tunnels, rooms and stairs; and visit traditional batik shops. You will be amazed by the colorful displays of fabrics decorated with artistic patterns and ill ustrations.Day 2 â€" YogyakartaAfter your initial impression of Indonesia, visit Prambanan, a collection of ancient Hindu temples. Built in 850 CE, this complex once featured 240 temples. The earthquake in 2006 destroyed parts of this magnificent sight, but the partially reconstructed site is open to visitors. Carved reliefs and numerous statues adorn these temples and provide visitors with an introduction to Hindu deities. Arrive early to beat the crowds and to get the chance to explore some of the hidden temples that tour groups easily miss. Rising Student Housing Costs What are the Options

Rising Student Housing Costs What are the Options Rising Student Housing Costs: What are the Options? Rising Student Housing Costs: What are the Options? In addition to the rising cost of tuition and college fees, student housing costs are also rising. This makes it even harder for students to make their way through four or five years of an undergraduate degree. Although some students will be able to pay part or all of their tuition through scholarships or student loans, they will still have to face rising costs of living. Additionally, students who don’t qualify for financial aid or scholarships will be faced with these housing costs on top of their already expensive tuition. Students need to save every dollar possible so they can spend more time focusing on academics and less time on a part-time job for more college tips, contact one of our Orange County college consultants. 1. Off-campus housing Based on price per square foot, on-campus housing is some of the most expensive real estate in the country. Thats why more and more college students are turning to off-campus housing throughout their college career. Although students may have to share a two bedroom/one bath apartment with three other students, this will still be less crowded and offer more privacy than living in a dorm. Off-campus apartments can provide a dining and living area that will allow students to save money by making inexpensive meals at home and provide them with a quiet study area so they can complete important assignments. There are several private rental agencies, unaffiliated with universities, which provide low-cost living arrangements for full-time students. Although students will not receive amenities that non-student living would have (think gym and pool) they will have affordable living at the very least (READ: 8 Reasons Applicants Fail to Get Into the College of their Choice). 2. Work-study Students who only worked during the summer in past years are now starting work-study programs on campus to afford living expenses. Students who attend college in an expensive area may be forced to add 10 to 20 hours of work into their already full study schedule. This becomes a problem for students when their work commitments affect their ability to study. However, work-study programs on campus are often more flexible than off-campus employment opportunities and can provide students with time off during finals and other exams. 3. Cost of living in general Students who are still in high school are advised to think about the cost of living in the towns and cities surrounding the college campuses to which they are applying. For example, some universities will be located in areas where a student could have their own bedroom and bathroom for $350 a month base rent, plus their total cost of living fees (including food) to total around $600 a month. On the other hand, some areas of the country will offer off-campus student housing at a minimum of $1000 a month (before food and bills). Expenses in each region and state can vary greatly, but this is something that most 18-year-olds are not aware of. If housing costs will be an issue for a student (as it will be for most students) they should consider cost of living as a factor when it comes down to choosing which university they want to attend (READ: College Scholarships 101: Burgers and Donuts). Bottom Line Although some students will be able to pay for part of their tuition through scholarships or financial aid, the reality is the majority of students will be paying for tuition on their own. Either way, it doesnt help to add high student housing costs on top of already expensive tuition. Students who are looking at colleges should consider the cost of living, while students who are already attending college are encouraged to look for off-campus alternatives that may be less expensive in the long run. Students should be able to focus on their education and not have to worry too much about how theyre going to put a roof over their head. Heading to college in the summer?
